In recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd, we draw attention to the work by the ServCollab community, who published in Journal of Services Marketing a special issue just a few weeks ago on "Improving Life on Planet Earth."
In the spirit of our transformative topics newsletter and its 'behind the scenes' storytelling, Ray Fisk, the founder and president of ServCollab, reflects on the community's purpose, the special issue, and upcoming opportunities to connect with ServCollab and its work.
When ServCollab announced itself in 2020 (Fisk et al., 2020), our article declared that service research collaborations can elevate the human experience. We made this bold claim based on our foundation in Transformative Service Research (TSR). ServCollab’s name is a contraction of "Serving Humanity Through Collaboration." Serving humanity is our purpose, and collaboration is our process. Our website (https://www.servcollab.org/news) has information on our first four ServCollab journal articles. You can also find information on how to become a member for free. If readers are curious about why I started ServCollab, you can find that answer here: https://www.servsig.org/wordpress/2022/06/climbing-a-new-mountain-seeking-to-serve-humanity/.
Our goal with the special issue ServCollab developed in partnership with the Journal of Services Marketing on “Improving Life on Planet Earth,” was to help researchers by synthesizing the 17 UN SDGs into Seven Service Research Themes: well-being, opportunity, resources, economics, institutions, planet, and collaboration.
Seven teams of coauthors from eight countries collaborated to write these invited commentaries. Each commentary explored research on a Service Research Theme and proposed research agendas to improve life on Planet Earth.

Elevating the human experience (HX) through research collaborations is the purpose of this article. ServCollab facilitates and supports service research collaborations that seek to reduce human suffering and improve human well-being. To catalyze this initiative, the authors introduce ServCollab's three human rights goals (serve, enable and transform), standards of justice for serving humanity (distributive, procedural and interactional justice) and research approaches for serving humanity (service design and community action research), and illustrates service inclusion (ServCollab's first focus) through two projects (transformative refugee services and virtual assistants in social care).
